Aufstiegs-BAföG: Requirements and Funding
Would you like to complete online further training instead of a bachelor's or master's degree? Even in this case, you can receive BAföG. Advancement-BAföG is a type of state funding for further training after completing vocational training. With Advancement-BAFÖG, you receive payments for your livelihood and your training programme. And – same as with regular BAföG – at the end of your studies, you only have to repay part of the money.
You can get Advancement-BAföG if you fulfil the requirements for admission to your training programme. As a rule, this means that you have already completed vocational training. As a high school graduate or university dropout, you are eligible if you already have professional experience. With a bachelor's degree, you can also receive BAföG for your online studies. Unlike to BAföG funding for a bachelor's or master's degree, you receive Advancement-BAföG regardless of your age. However, there are also some requirements for receiving Advancement-BAFÖG:
State-approval: You are eligible for BAföG if your online further training prepares you for a public-law exam. The exam must therefore be state-approved. Equivalently approved online training programmes may also be eligible. In addition, your provider must also be certified by the state.
Level of degree: It's important that your intended degree has a higher level than an applied vocational or journeyman’s exam. The degree must also be higher than a vocational degree. Therefore, you usually need to have completed vocational training for your further training to be financed by BAföG.
Minimum duration: You can receive BAföG for your online training from a minimum duration of 400 hours.
Full-time & part-time: Full-time online studies are supported by Advancement-BAföG if you invest a minimum of 25 working hours in your studies over the course of four days per week. The training can last up to three years. If you do part-time training, you receive funding from 18 working hours per week. In this case, you can take up to 4 years to complete your training.
Funding amount:
Funding for further training – expenses for courses and examinations: Up to €15.000 (regardless of your income and assets)
Living expenses: Up to €963 (depending on your income and assets)
